This summer study abroad program in Japan offers a hands-on introduction to marine biology through fieldwork in diverse coastal ecosystems. Students explore marine biodiversity, ecological processes, and conservation challenges through direct observation, species identification, and basic data collection. Guided by faculty and local Japanese biologists, experiences include rocky intertidal zones, coastal habitats, fisheries environments, and visits to research labs in Tokyo and aquariums.
The program also examines human genetic diversity and adaptation, using Japan as a case study to explore how historical populations shaped modern traits. Throughout the experience, students connect science with cultural context, gaining insight into Japan’s relationship with the ocean, sustainability practices, and its blend of tradition and innovation.
Academic coursework is balanced with cultural activities, including historical site visits, basic language learning, and guided exploration, helping students build global awareness alongside scientific and professional skills.

JunDay One
Overnight flight to Tokyo8
JunDay Two
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. After checking in, enjoy time to settle in and become acquainted with the city. Welcome dinner and program orientation in the evening.9
JunDay Three
Visit to the teamLab digital art museum, Tsukiji Outer Market, a hands-on sushi-making class, and an evening to explore Ginza.10
JunDay Four
Visit Toho University and meet with Yosuke for a university presentation and discussion with students, explore Shibuya Crossing.11
JunDay Five
Visit Meiji Shrine, explore the neighborhoods of Harajuku, Omotesando, and Sibuya, enjoy free time, gather for a farewell dinner in Tokyo before departing for western Japan the following morning.12
JunDay Six
Board the Shinkansen (bullet train) for the journey to Hiroshima to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Done, and the Peace Memorial Museum, participate in a powerful presentation and discussion with A-Bomb Legacy Successor.13
JunDay Seven
Travel by ferry to Miyajima Island to visit Utsukushima Shrine, the island's historic streets, scenic waterfront, and local shops, return to Hiroshima for an interactive cooking experience.14
JunDay Eight
Visit Himeji Castle, continue to Kyoto, participate in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.15
JunDay Nine
Explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Tenryu-ji Temple, Nijo Castle, and guided walking tour through Kyoto's Gion district.16
JunDay Ten
Participate in an introductory kendo lesson, visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and the beautifully preserved streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. Explore Nishiki Market before enjoying a farewell dinner.17
