Human Cord Blood Stem Cell Core

Mission

The mission of the AU Human Cord Blood Stem Cell Core is to support basic and clinical research towards development of novel therapies.

Diseases Treated

Cord blood and umbilical cord tissue contain potentially lifesaving hematopoietic (blood forming) and mesenchymal stem cells. These cells can be used for treatment of diverse diseases including

  • Hematological Malignancies (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma)
  • Neuroblastoma
  • Bone Marrow Failure Diseases
  • Anemias
  • Sickle Cell Disorders
  • Thalassemia Disorders
  • Immune deficiencies
  • Auto-Immune Diseases (e.g., Crohn’s Disease, Lupus)
  • Neurologic Disorders (e.g., Autism, cerebral pals, traumatic brain injury)
  • Genetic and/or Metabolic Disorders (e.g., Aging frailty, Tay-Sachs disease)
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular Diseases (e.g., cardiomyopathy, acute myocardial infarction)
