Block 1

Clinical Experience Block 1 

The PCL Clinical Experience includes: Telemedicine Patient Encounter Session, Clinical Procedures Session, and Ultrasound Session.

Arrive no later than 12:50 p.m. on your scheduled PCL Clinical Experience session or you are at risk for losing professionalism points. Bring your personal computer and stethoscope.

ZOOM ORIENTATION

  • Make sure you use the QR Code to sign in!
  • Orientation for the 2nd years

12:55-1:40PM

  • Intro to PCE: Dr. Broughton's lecture for 1st years

 

1:45-3:25pm

Telemedicine Encounters (1:45 or 2:35 start) 

  • PPE Competency From(2nd year completes)
  • There will be extra time to set up Amwell Now and review workflow of the day (How to prep for your telemedicine visit, EMR, SOAP, Documentation)
  • Patient Documentation Workflow

Clinical Procedures  (1:45 & 2:35 start) 

  • PPE donning and doffing

3:25-3:50pm

Orientation to Diagnostic Ultrasound and Consent

  • Join zoom link or watch here: Zoom recording
  • ZOOM ORIENTATION
  • Willingness to be scanned survey 

3:50-4:40pm

  • 1st years ultrasound blue blocks (2nd years will assist and perform US debrief with 1st year students)
  • Must save short access view of vessel with measurements for post quiz and D2L

Telemedicine Patient Encounter 

PREWORK REQUIRED

  •  Review Patient-Centered Communication Document
  •  Watch Case 1 - SOB, Case 2 - Opioids, and evaluate each video using the Patient-Centered Communication Evaluation Form
  •  Watch Patient-Centered Communication Telemedicine Visit
  •  Review PCL Note Template with additions specific for primary care and chronic conditions and Example Note that follows this template
  • Primary Care Interest Survey

POSTWORK

  • Documentation Workflow
  • All students complete your patient's note by 5:00 PM the day after your patient encounter and send in a [secure] email also using the Safe Harbor Method of De-Identification for HIPPA to your PCL preceptor and your M2 mentor staff for feedback. If this is not completed on time, you will lose professionalism points.
  • Complete the Class of 2029 PCL Clinical Experience Post-Visit Survey. 
  • If this is not completed, you may lose professionalism points.

OPTIONAL

  • Review In the Clinic: Transient Ischemic Attack Article (2011)
  • Guidance Regarding Methods for De-Identification of Protected Health Information in Accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule
  • Review Block 1 Introduction Orientation Powerpoint – Dr. Robbie Broughton
