Graduate Assistantships

General Eligibility Requirements for Graduate Assistantships

All assistantship appointment offers must be approved and extended by the Office of the Dean of The Graduate School. Students receiving assistantships must:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment in an eligible Graduate School Graduate Program. Full-time is defined as 12 credit hours per semester for the Biomedical Sciences, PhD program and 9 credit hours per semester for all other Graduate School programs.
  • Maintain good academic standing.
  • Make satisfactory academic progress.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of The Graduate School and Augusta University.
  • Ensure health insurance coverage that meets the requirements of the Board of Regents for the duration of the assistantship.
  • Meet all other specific eligibility requirements and expectations as defined by the program/department.

Master's Level Assistantships

Some available Graduate Assistant positions can be found on Handshake.

Students interested in being considered for masters-level assistantships for the upcoming term should send a current resume to Emily Crider for distribution to assistantship supervisors.

Administrative staff or faculty interested in hiring a masters-level graduate assistant should reach out to Emily Crider for information and instructions regarding the appropriate process.

Graduate Assistantship (GA)

Graduate Assistantships (GA) are offered to selected students to assist with general departmental/programmatic needs and support projects and programs not specifically designated for (but may involve) teaching or research. GA appointments provide enrolled students with experience working in higher education-related activities.

Candidates for GA positions are selected by specific graduate programs/departments and offers are approved and extended by the Dean of The Graduate School. The standard minimum hourly rate for Graduate Assistants is $15. As part of the GA package, students also pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 per semester (plus all student fees).

Graduate Administrative Assistantship (GAA)

Graduate Administrative Assistantships (GAA) are offered to selected students who provide general administrative support to faculty and/or departments. GAA appointments provide an immersive administrative leadership skill development experience that supports the strategic priorities of the institution.

Candidates for GAA positions are selected by specific graduate programs/departments and offers are approved and extended by the Dean of The Graduate School. The standard minimum hourly rate for Graduate Administrative Assistants is $15. As part of the GAA package, students also pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 per semester (plus all student fees).

Graduate Laboratory Assistantship (GLA)

Graduate Laboratory Assistantships (GLA) are offered to selected students to participate in research projects that may or may not be directly related to their thesis. GLA appointments provide a research-focused experience for students not enrolled in a research-focused PhD program.

Candidates for GLA positions are selected by specific graduate programs/departments and offers are approved and extended by the Dean of The Graduate School. The standard minimum hourly rate for Graduate Laboratory Assistants is $15. As part of the GLA package, students also pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 per semester (plus all student fees).

Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA) are offered to selected students who are assigned instructional duties. This includes all aspects of planning and teaching a course under faculty supervision. GTA appointments provide enrolled students with hands-on teaching experience.

Candidates for GTA positions are reserved for students in specific graduate programs and offers are approved and extended by the Dean of The Graduate School. The standard monthly rate for Graduate Teaching Assistants is $2,000. As part of the GTA package, students also pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 per semester (plus all student fees).

Doctoral Level Assistantships

Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) are appointed to perform research activities that are related to the student’s academic program and Augusta University’s research mission.

9-month GRAs receive an annual stipend of $23,250 and 12-month GRAs receive an annual stipend of $31,000. Upon admission to candidacy, GRAs receive a $1,000 increase to the annual stipend. GRAs pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 (plus all student fees).  As part of the GRA package, students also have a portion of their health insurance covered. 

There is no application process for Graduate Research Assistantships. GRAs are appointed to selected doctoral students. 

Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantships (GRA/GTA)

Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantships (GRA/GTA) are assigned responsibility for teaching duties that are related to their academic program under the direct supervision of a faculty member who is credentialed in the teaching discipline. GRA/GTAs are also responsible for maintaining duties in the research lab for the progression of their academic degree.

9-month GRA/GTAs receive an annual stipend of $23,250 and 12-month GRA/GTAs receive an annual stipend of $31,000. Upon admission to candidacy, GRA/GTAs receive a $1,000 increase to the annual stipend. GRA/GTAs pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 (plus all student fees). In addition, students have a portion of their health insurance covered.

GRA/GTAs are appointed to selected doctoral students.

Council of Graduate Schools - April 15 Resolution

The Graduate School at Augusta University participates in the Council of Graduate Schools’ (CGS) “Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees and Assistantships” also known as the “April 15 Resolution.” Participation in the resolution allows admitted graduate students to consider offers of financial support through April 15 for the fall entry term. Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15 for the fall entry term.
