Welcome to Genomic Medicine Graduate Program
Thank you for taking the time to visit the Genomic Medicine PhD program in the Medical
College at the Augusta University.
The recent genomic revolution has created unparalleled opportunities for biomedical
research including the studies of mechanism of diseases, monitoring of disease progression,
evaluation of effective therapies and new drug development. The availability of genomic
information will fundamentally change how medicine will be practiced in the future
with major changes (paradigm shifts) occurring in all areas of medicine. Future medical
care will emphasize disease prediction, prevention and the delivery of personalized
medicine. To understand the complex nature of a biological problem, future researchers
must be able to approach biomedical and clinical problems using integrated methodologies
as well as develop critical thinking skills.
To address this issue, our graduate program trains students at the interface of several
disciplines to prepare them for the challenges of modern biology and medicine. The
goal of the core curriculum is to provide a fundamental foundation in genetics, genomics,
proteomics, statistics and computational biology. The students use these technologies
to address leading edge questions that take advantage of genomic information now available
for humans and model organisms. The program emphasizes an extensive research experience
within an interdisciplinary and state-of-the-art research environment. The curriculum
integrates knowledge and experience from diverse disciplines to develop the breadth
necessary for students to approach problems in biomedical science. This integrated
background ensures that our graduates will have the breadth of knowledge necessary
to create new knowledge and be competitive for positions in biomedical research in
universities, medical schools, government agencies, and industry.
