Graduate Program Research Opportunities

Complex Diseases - Type 1 Diabetes, Cancer, Cardiovascular, Sickle Cell Disease, etc.

Research in the assessment of genetic polymorphisms in the development of preclinical measures of essential hypertension.
Specifically, looking at the effects of genetic variants in all of the nine adrenergic receptor subtype genes, alone or in combination, on cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) and other quantitative cardiovascular traits. Yanbin Dong, Ph.D.

Research in Phenotypic Modulators of Sickle Cell Disease and Hemoglobinopathies Genotype-Phenotype Correlations in Hemoglobinopathies. Abdullah Kutler, M.D.

Research focus on basic and clinical aspects of diabetes and its complications.
To elucidate the molecular mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and vasculopathy associated with microvascular complications in diabetes. The role of inflammation, altered mitochondrial dynamics, oxidative stress and apoptosis in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.Shruti Sharma, Ph.D.

Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology

Research in Biostatistics, Statistical Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology.
Primary methodological focus at present is on family-based association and linkage disequilibrium methods and Bayesian methods in genetic analysis. Varghese George, Ph.D.

Research in Phenotypic Modulators of Sickle Cell Disease and Hemoglobinopathies Genotype-Phenotype Correlations in Hemoglobinopathies. Abdullah Kutler, M.D.

Research in bioinformatics, computational biology, automation, autoimmunity, and diabetes.
The research efforts focus on the development the computing infrastructure and computational models for microarray data and looking at the temporal gene expression changes during the etiology of diabetes in rodent and human populations as well as phenotypic analysis of diabetic complications. Richard A. McIndoe, Ph.D.

Research in Statistical Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology; Human Population and Evolutionary Genetics; Bioinformatics and Biostatistics; Computational genomics. Hongyan Xu, Ph.D.

Research in the development of biologically meaningful algorithms for comprehensive analysis and visualization of high throughput data by incorporating biological knowledge and rigorous computational methods.
To carry out bioinformatics analysis and pursue research projects in collaboration with other biologists. To solve the challenges in genomic data analysis, and implement these solutions in usable software tools. To develop pipelines for analyzing data from many high-throughput technologies, including luminex, microarrays, next generation sequencing and mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Ashok Sharma, Ph.D.
