As the largest cancer center in southwest Georgia, the Phoebe Cancer Center at Phoebe
Health System serves about 1,500 new cancer patients every year through its primary
and satellite locations in Albany, Americus, Cordele and Sylvester.
Phoebe Health System has a comprehensive network of physicians, nurses, and staff at three hospitals and more than 20 clinics delivering high-quality health care to the residents of more than 30 counties across Southwest Georgia.
With a longstanding tradition of delivering compassionate and comprehensive cancer care following National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines, the Cancer Center offers a large array of programs for the prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of adult cancers.

Chirag Jani, MD
Medical Director, Phoebe Cancer Center
Chirag Jani, M.D., joined Phoebe in 2003 and practices Hematology, Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine with Phoebe Cancer Center. Currently, he serves as the Medical Director of Phoebe Cancer Center.
Dr. Jani has closely worked in hematology and oncology for the last ten years and in Geriatrics and Palliative care for an additional two years, delivering innovative cancer care to largely rural and poor counties with an underserved population. As a young physician, he has earned a solid and long-standing reputation in the field of cancer treatment and research.
Dr. Jani serves as Principal Investigator/Co-Investigator of various intergroup trials (CALGB, ECOG NSABP, SWOG, and CTSU), as well as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of Phase II and Phase III Pharmaceutical Clinical Studies. Furthermore, he actively participates in the assessment of potential new studies and provides insight into the continued development of Phoebe’s research program.
Dr. Jani teaches medical students through his appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Georgia. And he is integral in the maintenance of Phoebe’s Cancer Committee and Commission on Cancer Accreditation.
Dr. Jani has made a concerted effort to work in conjunction with other investigators to improve research in areas such as telemedicine, improve access to care for underserved populations, and participate in the development of our Patient Navigation and Breast Cancer Programs.

Other services include:
- Weekly conferences, where a multi-disciplinary team of board-certified physicians and other medical staff review all aspects of a patient’s case including pathology, imaging studies, medical histories and more. The team then makes a treatment recommendation based on national guidelines but tailored, as needed, to the individual patient.
- Genetic testing, including telegenetics, and pre- and post-test counseling. In fact, the Phoebe Putney Cancer Center was one of only four oncology centers selected for a national telegenetics pilot in 2017.
- A sick clinic for chemoradiation side effects, which provides immediate access to supportive therapies for patients experiencing treatment-related discomfort
- In-house labs, pharmacy and infusion
The Phoebe Cancer Center is a community hospital comprehensive cancer center accredited by the American College of Surgeons. It is also recognized as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence. The Carlton Breast Health Center is acknowledged as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
