University Cancer & Blood Center, LLC

NCORP Logo

At University Cancer & Blood Center, we’ve been fighting on the front lines of cancer treatment since we first opened our doors in 1981. We’re proud of how our training, research, and commitment have combined to positively impact patient outcomes. But through it all, we’ve found that the greatest discoveries we’ve made are actually about people.

We’ve learned that we have both a motivation and a responsibility to further serve and support the emotional, logistical, and financial needs of both our patients and their families. We’ve come to value our relationships within our communities. We’ve realized that people in underserved rural areas deserve equal access to care and treatment. We’ve discovered that by considering each patient’s struggle as uniquely their own, we’re more inclined to exhaust every available option for recovery. And we’ve come to appreciate the perseverance and commitment of the entire UCBC family.

Principal Investigator

Petros George Nikolinakos, MD, CPI

Petros G. Nikolinakos, MD, CPI (Certified Principal Investigator) is University Cancer & Blood Center’s managing partner. He also serves as the director and principal investigator of UCBC’s clinical research program, which conducts numerous trials involving novel targeted therapies, immunotherapies and breakthrough cancer treatments. Dr. Nikolinakos is a clinical Associate Professor at the University of Georgia and Augusta University and is a recipient of the 2013 ASCO Clinical Trials Participation Award.

Dr. Nikolinakos is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He joined UCBC in September 2009 after completing fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the NCI designated MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas where he conducted basic science as well as clinical and translational research. Prior to this, he was a resident and Chief Medical Resident at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital.

An author and cancer researcher, Dr. Nikolinakos has published on a variety of clinical and basic science cancer topics in The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oncogene, American Journal of Hematology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Public Library of Science, and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology. His numerous abstracts have been presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Other highlights include:

  • Nine locations: UCBC cares for adults with cancer across most of northeast Georgia.
  • Coordination of care: Today’s patients are able to remain at home instead of in the hospital but receive tests and treatments in several locations. UCBC emphasizes coordinating care between patients’ doctors to discuss treatment plans, related issues and progress.
  • Availability: UCBC’s oncologists always take calls – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – for patients in the hospital or at home.
  • A clinic that is open each weekday to monitor patient blood counts for optimum treatment scheduling and to provide IV fluids and medications that help reduce ER visits between treatments.
  • Onsite services, such as a COLA-certified lab, a patient-oriented pharmacy and full-time social workers.
