Augusta University is committed to the safety of every student. Fraternity and sorority members are expected to uphold university policy, their inter/national organization's standards, and all local, state, and federal laws.
Students considering membership should know that the organizations listed below have been suspended by the university for violations of the Student Code of Conduct. Suspended organizations may not hold organized activities, recruit new members, or participate in university activities as an organization. They must petition Augusta University for re-recognition after their suspension ends.
Hazing has no place at Augusta University. The federal Stop Campus Hazing Act defines hazing as:
"Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person (whether individually or in concert with other persons) against another person or persons regardless of the willingness of such other person or persons to participate, that (I) is committed in the course of an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in a student organization; and (II) causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or the organization (such as the physical preparation necessary for participation in an athletic team), of physical or psychological injury including:
(a) whipping, beating, striking, electronic shocking, placing of a harmful substance on someone's body, or similar activity; (b) causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing sleep deprivation, exposure to the elements, confinement in a small space, extreme calisthenics, or other similar activity; (c) causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to consume food, liquid, alcohol, drugs, or other substances; (d) causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts; (e) any activity that places another person in reasonable fear of bodily harm through the use of threatening words or conduct; (f) any activity against another person that includes a criminal violation of local, State, Tribal, or Federal law; and (g) any activity that induces, causes, or requires another person to perform a duty or task that involves a criminal violation of local, State, Tribal, or Federal law."
The law defines a student organization as "an organization at an institution of higher education (such as a club, society, association, varsity or junior varsity athletic team, club sports team, fraternity, sorority, band, or student government) in which two or more of the members are students enrolled at the institution of higher education, whether or not the organization is established or recognized by the institution."
Prevention education: Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life (OFSL) delivers programming related to hazing prevention, alcohol awareness, domestic and sexual violence prevention and more to help chapter leaders turn standards into chapter-level action.
Augusta University publishes findings of hazing violations by student organizations as required by state and federal law.
Fraternity and sorority members enjoy time together through brotherhood and sisterhood retreats, formals, homecoming, themed events, and more. Members are dedicated to their academics and also value time to celebrate and connect.
Augusta University is committed to ensuring every organization adds to the educational value of the student experience. Chapters must follow alcohol and risk management policies consistent with state, local, and federal law. These policies are enforced by university administrators, chapter advisors, and members themselves.
Every fraternity and sorority follows its inter/national organization's alcohol policy, which requires members to follow all federal, state, and local laws. University policies on alcohol and drugs also apply to all students. Registered chapter events must follow both university policy and inter/national risk reduction policy. Events where alcohol is present, such as date parties, formals, and tailgates, must follow firm risk reduction and safety guidelines. All recruitment and new member activities must be alcohol free.
