Formal recruitment is the structured process organized by the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils so interested students can meet every chapter in those councils. Panhellenic hosts formal recruitment in the fall semester only. IFC hosts formal recruitment at the start of both the fall and spring semesters.

Yes. IFC chapters recruit informally throughout the year, and Panhellenic chapters may offer membership through Continuous Open Bidding (COB). NPHC and MGC chapters recruit and welcome new members on their own schedules and do not hold a formal recruitment program.
After formal recruitment ends, some Panhellenic chapters continue to accept new members through COB. This process is less formal: chapters reach out directly to invite interested students to gatherings and events. Each chapter conducts COB differently. To express interest, contact the Panhellenic Council or individual chapters.
Membership Intake is the process NPHC chapters use to welcome new members. Each chapter organizes its own intake, which includes selection, education about the organization, and initiation into full membership.
No. NPHC and MGC chapters are open to students of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. NPHC organizations were founded by African American students to provide support and encouragement in higher education, and they continue to focus on initiatives that uplift their communities.
Cost varies by chapter. Dues support inter/national fees, chapter operations, social events, and other expenses. New members should expect higher dues in their first semester because of initiation fees. Ask each chapter about its dues before you commit.
Any worthwhile activity takes time, and you get out of it what you put into it. Most members successfully balance academics, part-time jobs, and social lives with chapter membership. Some commitments are required, such as chapter meetings, community service, and new member education, but these are scheduled in advance. Time commitments vary by chapter. Membership should never interfere with your academic commitments.
The minimum standard is that you must have a 2.5 GPA. Please note that some chapters may require higher GPA to join their organization.

Contact OFSL at greeklife@augusta.edu or use the university's reporting options on Anti-Hazing Information and Reporting.

Ask your student about the chapters they are considering, the cost, and the time commitment. Encourage them to ask questions and to choose a chapter whose values match their own.

All chapters must follow university policy, their inter/national organization's standards, and the law. Recruitment and new member activities must be alcohol free, and hazing is prohibited. See the Health & Safety page.

Advisors

Chapter advisors are trusted partners to the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life (OFSL). Students lead their chapters, and advisors give the guidance, continuity, and accountability that help them succeed. Every recognized chapter at Augusta University must have an approved advisor on file with OFSL.

  • Register with OFSL at the start of each academic year, and update your contact information within 10 business days of any change.
  • Complete the annual advisor orientation, plus required training on hazing prevention and the Max Gruver Act, Title IX and mandatory reporting, and risk management.
  • Know the OFSL Standard Operating Procedures, your council's governing documents, the Student Code of Conduct, and your organization's national policies.
  • Meet with the chapter president regularly, and attend chapter meetings and executive board meetings regularly.
  • Review chapter finances, the new member education plan, and the risk management plan each term.
  • Support recruitment and intake as a shared responsibility. Be present and available during recruitment periods, not only at the end.
  • Attend key chapter events, including initiation and major programs, when possible.
  • Help the chapter meet the Paws of Excellence standards and keep the chapter GPA at or above 2.7.
  • Review chapter academic reports and support members who fall below academic expectations.
  • Make sure required paperwork is submitted on time, including rosters, event registrations, and annual recognition materials.
  • Attend advisor meetings and trainings hosted by OFSL each semester.
  • Keep OFSL informed about chapter concerns, leadership changes, and contact from your national organization.
  • Respond to OFSL communications within 2 business days during the academic year.
  • Report suspected hazing, misconduct, or safety concerns to OFSL right away. Advisors cannot handle these matters privately within the chapter.
  • Follow Augusta University's mandatory reporting requirements as a responsible adult working with students.
  • Use the CARE referral for students who need support.
  • An assigned OFSL staff liaison for your council.
  • Orientation, training, and ongoing advisor development opportunities.
  • Chapter grade reports, standards results, and assessment data.
  • Consultation on student concerns, conduct matters, and chapter operations.

Questions? Contact OFSL at greeklife@augusta.edu or 706-721-7921.
