Healthcare Careers LLC for Spanish Speakers

The Healthcare Careers Living Learning Community (LLC) for Spanish Speakers is designed to address the urgent need for healthcare personnel who can converse in Spanish.

The goal of this LLC is to support freshmen students who intend to pursue any of various healthcare professions. An intermediate level of proficiency in spoken Spanish is required for acceptance. Participants in this LLC will live near each other in an Augusta University residence hall during their freshman year. Choice of major should be appropriate to the desired healthcare career. There will be presentations about various fields of health care and the requirements to qualify for professional programs of study, as well as social gatherings and events for students to participate in.

Admission Process

The application for acceptance into this LLC is included in the application for Augusta University Housing. The Spanish-speaking component of this LLC is required to gain admission, and students will need an intermediate level of proficiency to be considered for a spot. Proficiency will be determined by oral interview with a faculty member from the Department of English and World Languages in the Pamplin College at Augusta University. Interviews will be conducted on Zoom and last up to twenty minutes. To get more information about admission, please contact the LLC Program Manager, Janelle Mangrum at jmangrum@augusta.edu.

LLCs are an ideal way to make friends with peers who have similar interests and career goals. Research shows that, compared to non-LLC participants, students who participate in an LLC have:

  • Higher academic success rates
  • Higher college graduation rates
  • An easier time connecting with their peers

What’s special about the Healthcare Careers LLC for Spanish Speakers?

This LLC is designed to provide a supportive first-year experience for Spanish-speaking freshmen who intend to pursue a healthcare career. There is an urgent need for medical personnel who can converse in Spanish. This LLC has been created to help our healthcare-focused Spanish-speaking students fill that need.

What are the benefits of participating in the Healthcare Careers for Spanish Speakers?

  • Informational presentations about various healthcare careers and the requirements for entry into professional healthcare programs, including many degree programs offered at Augusta University
  • Greater academic support opportunities:
    • Living and studying in close proximity to other LLC participants creates a mutually supportive shared experience during the important first year of college
    • Opportunities to take one or more courses together with others in the LLC during each of the fall and spring semesters
    • Mentoring by experienced, successful students
    • Study sessions and tutoring readily accessible near residence hall
  • More positive, supportive residential experience

How much does this LLC cost? Are there any additional requirements?

There is no additional cost for participating in this LLC. However, you will be expected to participate in a number of activities, including many which are specifically tailored to exploring healthcare careers and professional healthcare programs.

What happens if I am not selected for an LLC?

Students not selected for this or any other LLC, whether incoming first-year or upper-class, have the opportunity to continue general room selection with all other students.

Do I have to live on campus to participate in an LLC?

Yes! Students must live on campus to participate in an LLC. Only students who have signed a housing contract will be considered for LLC selection.

Can I be roommates with someone who is not participating in this LLC?

No. Students in this LLC will be assigned roommates with other students accepted to the Healthcare Careers LLC for Spanish Speakers.

Do I have to be a native Spanish speaker to be considered for the LLC?

No, but you do have to demonstrate that you have intermediate proficiency in spoken Spanish. 

Do I have to declare any specific major to participate in this LLC?

No. If you have an intent to enter a healthcare field you can apply.

How will spoken Spanish proficiency be evaluated?

You will be invited to participate in an approximately 10-to-20-minute Zoom interview with a faculty member from the Department of English and World Languages or be asked to complete a 2-5 minute video responding to questions. The video will be reviewed for proficiency and content by a member of the department.

How do I apply to participate in the Healthcare Careers LLC for Spanish Speakers?

The option to join this LLC will be a part of the AU Housing application.

Will I have to wait until the Housing applications close to find out if I have been accepted into the LLC ?

No, we will be doing a rolling decision. The process of evaluating LLC applications generally takes 20 business days. Applicants can monitor their status on the AU residential housing portal. If you have not heard about the status of your LLC application after 20 business days, please contact Program Director Janelle Mangrum.
