Changing Courses to Change Lives For online students, a D2L Brightspace course is their Augusta University classroom. If they are in an online program, it is their entire AU campus. If they are augmenting on-campus studies, it is an extension of the physical campus.
At its core, the purpose of the Augusta University Online Education Changing Courses to Change Lives (AUOE CCCL) project is to elevate online education across AU by establishing and implementing standards for online course design and teaching practices to benefit all students who enter an AU education experience in D2L Brightspace. In addition, AUOE CCCL hosts comprehensive faculty development to support faculty advancing their methods. Sponsored by the Provost, the AUOE CCCL project embraces a collaborative approach to establishing a shared set of characteristics for both designing and teaching online courses. A comprehensive support system to assist faculty in implementing these characteristics is a critical deliverable of the project.
The AUOE Characteristics of Online Course Design and Teaching were created to help define what high-quality online course design and teaching can look like at Augusta University. These Characteristics are organized into categories that help faculty create online courses that are clear, accessible, engaging, and supportive of student success.
The Online Course Design Institute focuses on how they might enhance their online courses by exploring how courses are organized, how accessible and inclusive they are, how clearly expectations are communicated, and how learning materials, activities, and assessments support student success.
Research on online teaching competencies reminds us that defining effective teaching characteristics helps clarify the skills and expectations associated with online instruction. This offering builds upon the practices faculty use to guide and support students in the online environment by examining communication, feedback, facilitation, instructor presence, inclusion, and engagement.
