Protecting Augusta University through innovation, technology, and partnership
At Augusta University, the Information Technology Physical Security team plays a vital role in protecting our campus through innovative, technology-driven security solutions. Our department designs, installs, manages, and supports a wide range of advanced systems, including the campus-wide security camera network, electronic access control, and other integrated technologies that work in tandem with the university's technology infrastructure.
In close collaboration with the Augusta University Police Department, we ensure these systems provide real-time support for safety operations and contribute to maintaining a secure campus environment. By leveraging state-of-the-art technology, we deliver reliable tools that enhance situational awareness, strengthen emergency response, and safeguard the university community.
Our mission is clear: to combine expertise in information technology and physical security to achieve the highest level of protection for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Through innovation, partnership, and dedication, we help create a campus where safety and security empower education, research, and a safe and healthy work environment to thrive.
Augusta University IT Physical Security administers the electronic access control system. Electronic access control is accomplished with the JagCard, along with card readers installed near doors. It helps provide controlled access for faculty, staff, students and support personnel to AU. Its use is expected to expand over campus as buildings are built, remodeled, and redesigned. IT Physical Security regulates the general framework, approves and oversees all installations and maintenance, and assists AU End-Users to manage their department and building access.
The benefits of electronic access control is to allow for doors to be placed on a time schedule to unlock and lock to suit AU academic and business needs. It provides a record of who gains access through the use of the AU JagCard, and allows for people to have access granted or removed easily. Access control requests must be approved by the Department Access Coordinator, the Service Group Manager, the Project Manager (for projects) or the Building Coordinator in instances the previous do not apply. These can be sent to jagaccess@augusta.edu.

Security Surveillance Cameras
Augusta University is committed to providing a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by integrating proven safety practices with advanced security technology.
As part of this commitment, the university has deployed an extensive network of security cameras across campus to enhance situational awareness, deter criminal activity, and support the protection of people, facilities, and university assets. Video technology also provides valuable evidence to assist the Augusta University Police Department during investigations when incidents occur.
To further strengthen campus safety, Augusta University is deploying intelligent edge analytics that enable cameras to detect and alert on specific events and behaviors in real time. These advanced capabilities enhance the university's ability to respond more quickly to potential safety concerns while improving the overall effectiveness of the security program.
Security camera systems are used for legitimate public safety and security purposes, including protecting life and property, supporting emergency response, securing restricted-access areas, monitoring special events, and assisting with investigations when university policy or the law may have been violated. Together, these technologies play an important role in preventing crime, improving campus safety, and protecting Jaguar Nation.
Alarm Systems
AU facilities may be protected by security intrusion detection systems (IDS), also known as a security alarm system. This can be accomplished with a dedicated stand-alone alarm system or through the Access Control System. An alarm system can also provide a capability for an emergency panic or duress button.
The installation of alarm systems and panic buttons requires thoughtful implementation and must be tested routinely with AU Police to make sure they function properly.
In lieu of a physical duress button, AU is encouraging occupants to download the Rave Guardian App for use as the app provides a feature that will operate as a duress button that provides location and can communicate with AUPD dispatch personnel when assistance is needed. The ITPSD support systems that meet the current AU standard for security devices/technologies.
Based Security Systems
The ITPSD also support other technologies such as AI phones, Emergency phone towers and more.
AU IT Physical Security technician team helps by keeping AU Security Systems working. They conduct preventative maintenance activities as well as repair services on access control systems, camera systems and alarm/panic buttons.
