Curriculum and Rotations

First Year (PGY1): The purpose of the first year is to broaden the education of the new medical school graduate in related disciplines and to provide a foundation for normal obstetrics and gynecology. Rotations in this PGY level include: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI), Gynecology (GYN), Obstetrics (OB), Night Float (NF),  Ambulatory/Triage (AMB), and Gynecologic Oncology (GYN/ONC). Most of these rotations at our primary site, Augusta University/Wellstar MCG Health.

Beginning in the first year of residency, continuity of care clinics are scheduled for individual residents. Four years of continuous patient care are maintained by the same resident, under faculty supervision.

Second Year (PGY2): Second year expands on the education of normal and abnormal obstetrics and gynecology. The resident assumes increasing responsibility for service duties, in addition to care of the individual patient. Rotations for this PGY level include: Night Float (NF), Gynecologic Oncology (GYN/ONC), Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), Obstetrics (OB), Urogynecology (URO/GYN), Piedmont Hospital Gynecologic Surgery (PH), and Global Health (GH).

Third Year (PGY3): Third year serves as an important year in the transition to becoming a chief. During this year the resident assumes greater responsibility in the management of more complex clinical care and substantially expands their surgical experience. Residents will also continue to reinforce their basic foundation education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Rotations for this PGY Level include: Urogynecology (URO/GYN), Advanced Surgery and Gynecology (Albany), Piedmont Hospital Gynecologic Surgery (PH), Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), Obstetrics (OB), Research (RES), Resident Float Team (ROVER), Gynecologic Oncology (GYN/ONC), and Night Float (NF).

Fourth Year (PGY4): Fourth year completes the basic education in obstetrics and gynecology and prepares the resident physician to act as a consultant to non-obstetricians and gynecologists. Chief residents assume more teaching responsibility their team, including junior residents and medical students. Each year, a senior resident from this cohort is peer-selected as Administrative Chief Resident. Rotations for this PGY Level include: Urogynecology (URO/GYN), Ambulatory/Triage (AMB), Piedmont Hospital Gynecologic Surgery (PH), Advanced Surgery and Gynecology (Albany), Gynecology (GYN), Gynecologic Oncology (GYN/ONC), Obsetrics (OB), and Night Float (NF).
