What is Course-Based Tutoring?
Course-Based Tutoring is targeted academic support offered for specific high-demand and high-enrollment courses. Instead of focusing on a subject in general, Course-Based Tutoring is tied directly to the course you are taking.
For Students: You’ll work with a trained peer educator who has successfully completed the same course. Sessions focus on reviewing course content, practicing problem-solving, and reinforcing key concepts so you can stay on track and feel confident in class.
For Faculty: Course-Based Tutors complement classroom instruction by reinforcing what is taught, encouraging active learning strategies, and helping students practice material outside of class. Tutors can also provide feedback about common areas where students struggle.
For Staff & Advisors: Course-Based Tutoring is an academic support option you can recommend to students who need additional practice or who may be at risk of falling behind in a specific course.
Unlike general tutoring, this model ensures that the support is aligned with the course syllabus, assignments, and expectations—making it more relevant and immediately applicable to student success.
What is Embedded Tutoring?
Embedded Tutoring places a trained peer tutor directly into a specific class. The tutor regularly attends class sessions, builds rapport with students, and provides support that is closely connected to what is happening in real time. Students can ask questions during class activities, join small-group review sessions, or connect with the tutor outside of class for additional practice.
Key Features of Embedded Tutoring:
The tutor is part of the classroom community.
Support is immediate and contextual, aligned with each lecture or lab activity.
Students benefit from in-class guidance and outside-class reinforcement.
How Embedded Tutoring Differs from Course-Based Tutoring
Course-Based Tutoring: Offered outside of class. Students choose to attend scheduled tutoring sessions focused on a specific course. The tutor is not present in the classroom but is trained to support the course content.
Embedded Tutoring: Offered both inside and outside of class. The tutor attends class sessions, knows the pace of instruction, and can anticipate and address challenges as they arise.
In short: Course-Based Tutoring happens around the course, while Embedded Tutoring happens within the course.
Who Can Benefit?
Tutoring is for all students—not just those who feel like they are struggling.
Students aiming to strengthen understanding: If you’re having difficulty with specific concepts, tutoring provides one-on-one or small-group support to clarify and reinforce what you’re learning in class.
Students who want to improve grades: Tutors help with practice, test preparation, and study strategies tailored to the course.
High-achieving students: Even if you already do well, tutoring can deepen your understanding, sharpen problem-solving skills, and challenge you to think at a higher level.
First-year and transfer students: Tutoring can smooth the transition into college-level coursework and expectations.
Faculty & Staff Referrals: Advisors and instructors can connect students to tutoring as an early intervention tool before small challenges become bigger obstacles.
In short: Tutoring supports any student who wants to perform better, build confidence, and maximize success in their courses.
