Am I a first-gen student if my parents started college but did not finish their degree?
If your parents took a few college classes or even completed community college, you will often be considered first-gen. Check in with a campus resource in admissions, academic advising, or student services to learn more!
Am I a first-gen student if other members of my family (step-parents, siblings, grandparents) achieved their degree?
Yes. Being a first-gen student means that your parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education. Older siblings and family members who attended college may be a great resource as you navigate your college journey!
What if I just need support?
We support all students who could benefit from additional knowledge about navigating college, even if they have a family member who earned a graduate degree.
We invite the entire Augusta University community to come out and show your support for our men’s basketball team during the National First-Generation Celebration! “The TRIO SSS grant is more than funding; it is an investment in potential that will empower our students to persist and succeed,” says AU President Russell T. Keen.

The initiative gives first-year, first-generation students the chance to graduate debt-free, while providing mentorship, leadership and academic support.

“Events like these bring light to first-gen students, and just the fact that it’s a whole day where we can go and celebrate together is just a joy,” says Mikelle Smith.

"Providing students with a financial scholarship to graduate debt-free creates access for first-generation college students,” said Susan Davies, PhD.
