Abdullah Kutlar, MD

Dr. Abdullah Kutlar was born on May 30, 1947 and has passed away on September 11, 2026. He was both an accomplished researcher and a compassionate physician as he dedicated his life to improving the care of patients with blood disorders, especially those living with sickle cell disease. Even after retirement, he continued to care for those who depended on him. At 78, he was still doing the work he loved.

Dr. Kutlar served at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University since 1982, where he has made major contributions to clinical care, basic science, clinical research, and educational activities. He was the Co-PD/PI of the multi-institutional National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities Southeastern Exploratory Sickle Cell Center of Excellence as well as the Co-PD/PI of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Excellence in Hemoglobinopathies Research Award. He completed more than 20 industry sponsored trials and federally funded projects, had worked on two investigator initiated projects, and brought to Augusta University an excess of nine million dollars in research support. Dr. Kutlar had 200 original articles, two book chapters, and 177 abstract presentations.

Under Dr. Kutlar’s direction, the Sickle Cell Center maintained continuous funding from the State of Georgia for the newborn screening program through the Sickle Cell Center, which allows for the operation of the pediatric and adult clinics in Augusta and outreach clinics in South Georgia.
