Getting Started

The purpose of the EII’s Faculty Development Fellowship Program is to provide select Augusta University health professions faculty with a guided training experience that broadens their professional identity; equips them with new skills, abilities, and knowledge; and prepares them to make scholarly and educational contributions that will enhance or improve health professions education at Augusta University and beyond.

Educational Research Track (ERT): The purpose of the ERT is to facilitate participants’ formation and development as (a) producers of health professions educational research, (b) advocates for educational research within their own departments and the broader Augusta University community, and (c) coaches, mentors, and leaders to other Augusta University faculty who are interested in or engaged in health professions educational research.

Teaching Scholars Track (TST): The purpose of the TST is to facilitate participants’ formation and development as (a) health professions educators who are knowledgeable, purposeful, and skilled in teaching, learning, educational assessment, and educational scholarship and (b) educational experts and leaders within their own departments and the broader Augusta University community.

Expectation of Fellows:

  • ERT
    1. Two year commitment
    2. 80% attendance at weekly sessions
    3. Completion and publication of an educational research study
  • TST:
    1. 10 month commitment (no meetings in July or December)
    2. 80% attendance at weekly sessions
    3. Completion of educational scholarly project

Eligibility to apply:

All Augusta University faculty wanting to make health science educational research a part of their career or wanting to develop their expertise in health science education are eligible to apply.

Funding:

Faculty applicants negotiate with their department Chair for 10% release time to attend weekly training sessions and to develop project. The department financially supports this release time.

Application Material:

  1. Face page. Use the attached form; one copy must contain the applicant's original signature.
  2. Statement of Interest. Describe reasons for applying. Indicate if you consider the education research track or the teaching scholars track a better fit for you (1 page).
  3. Current curriculum vitae
  4. Department chair’s letter of recommendation, including the reasons for supporting the application and documentation of adequate support by the department (e.g., release time)
  5. Mentorship: Please identify one or two individuals who might be able to provide additional research/peer support during the fellowship (e.g., formal or informal research/teaching mentors, potential collaborators, people with similar content interest) and describe the support they could bring to your fellowship experience. (1/2 page)
  6. Potential project description. Describe a project idea or, at minimum, the content area for your fellowship project. For educational research track, include a statement about your intention to submit your scholarly project for publication in a peer reviewed journal or for presentation at a national professional meeting. (1 page)

Review Process:

Applications will be reviewed by the EII leadership team, and applicants may be invited for an interview. Applications will be evaluated with regard to the applicant’s interest in teaching and potential for scholarship, likelihood of continued work in educational research, and synergy with Augusta University educational programs. Letters of acceptance will be sent in October to the faculty member and the department chair.

Submitting Application:

An electronic copy of the completed application should be submitted to EDI@augusta.edu.

Educational Research Fellowship

The purpose of the ERT is to facilitate participants’ formation and development as (a) producers of health professions educational research, (b) advocates for educational research within their own departments and the broader Augusta University community, and (c) coaches, mentors, and leaders to other Augusta University faculty who are interested in or engaged in health professions educational research.

The ERT is a two-year fellowship experience designed to nurture the careers of mid-career faculty by providing training in health education research. ERT fellows focus on research activities for the equivalent of ½ day per week and attend weekly meetings with the fellowship director where they learn the basics of education research, develop research projects, and discuss professional development issues. Fellows complete at least one discovery project, suitable for peer review and publication or presentation, during their fellowship experience.

Teaching Scholars Fellowship

The overarching goal of the Educational Innovation Institute (EII) Fellowship Programs is to encourage faculty from our university to pursue high quality scholarly work in education. As such, we are pleased to invite applications from faculty in all Augusta University and ASU Colleges for the 2015 EII Teaching Scholars Fellowships cycle. Applicants should demonstrate a clear interest in health sciences education to be eligible.

Each fellow is expected to devote one-half day per week (10%) to group, independent, and mentored activities related to the fellowships. The Teaching Scholars Fellowship is a rigorous training program for health science educators seeking to enhance their expertise in teaching, curriculum and program development, learner evaluation, and mentoring. Upon completion of the fellowship, faculty will have the knowledge and skills to be educational leaders in their Departments and Colleges.
