Our program is a categorical four-year program.  Currently, we recruit six adult neurology residents and one pediatric neurology resident annually. Our residents rotate at the Augusta University Medical Center and Clinics and also at the Charlie Norwood VA Hospital, which is linked to the Augusta University Medical Center via an indoor sky bridge.

Our program fosters a culture of academic and clinical excellence in patient care with many opportunities for academic research to pursue individual interests in neuroscience. We carry on our institution’s legacy of strong academic training, leadership, and research as we are a referral center for the Southeast and are associated with the 13th oldest medical school in the United States. As such, our residents are given a dynamic experience of being an integral part of the team and routinely teach medical students and visiting residents. The neurology department has a legacy for didactics and was named as the Institutions Clinical Teaching Department of the year in 2013. Our program is often described as being infectious because of its collegial atmosphere as many of our attending physicians have trained at our facility at some point in their careers and have returned here to practice. Our attending physicians are knowledgeable, many with international reputations, yet they remain personable and approachable which makes learning neurology here a mutual pleasure for faculty and learners at various levels including resident physicians and student doctors.

The department is comprised of a strong foundation in general neurology and neurological subspecialties including: stroke/telestroke, general/headache, movement disorders, neurocognitive disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, multiple sclerosis, clinical neurophysiology, neuropsychology, neuro-critical care, interventional neurology and pediatric neurology. Furthermore, our medical school has the resources in place to ensure that our residents have enriched comprehensive residency training. Our team also works very closely with subspecialists from other departments including general neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuro-otology, neuro-ophthalmology, functional neurosurgery (deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery), and neuro-gastroenterology. Our facility also houses a wide variety of other specialties including a level IV trauma center, and seven ICUs (neurology, shock trauma, surgery, pediatric, neonatal, cardiology, and medical), which affords our residents the opportunity to see a broad comprehensive variety of consults and also to refer to a wide variety of in-house specialists.

We have consistently attracted and matched highly motivated and qualified neurology residents. We are devoted to ensuring that they are well trained in our flexible collegial atmosphere. We are very proud of our alumni, as we believe they are a direct extension and therefore representation of our department. Please click on the link to see “Where are they now” biosketch profiles of some of them. We appreciate your time and interest. Please contact me or our residency coordinator Debbie Langston if you have any questions regarding our residency program and interview process.
