We are truly delighted to have you join us on our campus and to be part of this important stage of your medical education.
Our campus is in Marietta, Georgia, approximately 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. We are a two-year clinical campus and the newest of all the regional campuses within the Medical College of Georgia. We are designated to have 24 students per cohort. On our campus, you will receive clinical training in core and elective specialties. We will also provide community service experience.
During your clinical training, you will learn how to apply the knowledge you acquired from preclinical learning to direct patient care. You will receive excellent supervision from supportive and dedicated clinical faculty. Students will gain medical knowledge and learn to develop clinical and diagnostic skills, which will prepare them for residency. Learners will have exposure to both ambulatory and inpatient settings. They will learn about the integration of healthcare teams and how they deliver care to diverse patient populations. At the Wellstar-MCG Atlanta Regional Campus, we offer the Traditional Track Curriculum. One of our goals is to engage students early in their clinical training to instill enthusiasm for medicine and patient care.
Inpatient rotations are held at the Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. This is a 630+ bed hospital designated as an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level 1 Trauma Center with Comprehensive Cardiac Services, Cancer Center, and a Level 1 Comprehensive Stroke Center. The emergency department has approximately 166 beds and is one of the busiest in the nation. Kennestone became a teaching hospital on July 1, 2016. Currently, there are eight teaching programs. Seven residencies, including Internal Medicine (with both a traditional and primary care track), Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, a Transitional Year program, and a one-year fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine. All the teaching programs have an ambulatory clinic except for Emergency Medicine and Transitional year programs.
You will have badge access to the brand-new medical student space located next to the hospital and connected by a bridge. This space houses conference rooms, student workstations with desktop computers, a simulation room, lockers, multiple bathrooms, a shower, call rooms, a lounge area with a television, and a break area with a refrigerator. Offices for the Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, and two campus coordinators are also located in this space. Students will have access, free of charge, to the on-campus comprehensive workout facility called Wellstar Health Place and parking. There are plans to eventually provide student campus housing.
The city of Marietta has approximately 60,000 residents and is in Cobb County. It features a charming historic town square filled with shops, restaurants, and a farmer’s market. In the center of the town square is Glover Park, which holds outdoor concerts, festivals, and a playground for children, providing opportunities for family fun. The city of Marietta is also popular for its green spaces, including numerous parks and trails such as the Silver Comet Trail for those who enjoy walking, biking, and the outdoors. Marietta provides relatively fast access to the city of Atlanta and the north Georgia mountains.
Finally, we want our students to know that we are invested in and committed to their well-being, training, careers, and growth as future physicians. Our medical students represent an integral part of our academic institution and community. I look forward to seeing you on campus and following your progress throughout your time with us. On behalf of our entire clinical campus, welcome.
Warm regards,
