Dr. Michael Brands, vice dean of academic affairs at the Medical College of Georgia,
is a physiologist, longtime faculty member, and educator.
Dr. Brands joined the medical school faculty in 2000 and has served the medical school
in a variety of roles, including as chair of the MCG Student Academic Promotions and
Professionalism Committee and as a member of the MCG Faculty Promotion and Tenure
Committee. Since 2007, he has directed the cardiopulmonary module and the medical
physiology component of the pre-clerkship curriculum. He continues in those roles
as well as lecturing in the module.
His past service to the university and medical school also has included serving as
the Department of Physiology’s Graduate Program director, directing Augusta University's
Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program, chairing the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee, and serving on the Admissions Committee for the University System of Georgia’s
MD/PhD Program. A Regents’ Professor in the Department of Physiology, Dr. Brands is
an NIH-funded investigator of over 25 years who studies renal mechanisms for control
of blood pressure, mechanisms for hypertension, and regulation of circulatory homeostasis.
