The Opera Initiative is Augusta University’s opera and music theatre performing ensemble. Students in all disciplines of study are welcome to register.
The Opera Initiative at Augusta University is an artistic and educational training program for undergraduate singers. We offer performance experiences each semester tailored to provide every student a chance in the spotlight. Recent semesters have included fully staged productions, scenes programs, music theatre cabarets and educational outreach performances at local schools. Our mission includes introducing students to great music, providing high level music preparation, character development, stage movement and culminating in a variety of performance opportunities.
Opera celebrates World Voice Day each April and reaches out to the community to share our joy in singing. Past World Voice Day events have included a unique collaboration with the Departments of Otolaryngology and Kinesiology at Augusta University, on healthy vocal maintenance, health and wellness.
For high school singers, Augusta University's Music Conservatory offers a summer music theatre day camp. Rising ninth graders through graduating twelfth graders are welcomed to campus for a week long musical theatre intensive. Camp takes place in the Maxwell Theatre, directed by Dr. Christi Amonson and assisted by university student camp counselors. During Phantom Camp in 2019, students enjoyed crash courses in audition technique, acting, singing, choreography, costume making, tech crew, master classes with superstar guest artists, a fantastic performance of scenes from Phantom of the Opera for family and friends, and of course, many snacks!
