Goals:
- Learn basic pathologic diagnostic approach through participation in the surgical and
autopsy
neuropathology service.
- To successfully correlate pathologic diagnosis with clinical findings to help optimize
therapeutic decision.
Objectives:
-
- To achieve familiarity and basic understanding of pathologic changes involving common
disease of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and skeletal muscle.
- To develop basic concepts of diagnostic value of pathologic evaluation of CNS neoplasia,
neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy resections, and autopsy neuropathology.
- To develop basic concepts of clinico-pathologic correlation through close interaction
with neuropathologist on daily sign-outs and attending conferences.
- The potential exists for participation in research and publication.
Activities:
-
- Participate in routine microscopic sign out with faculty including biopsies and gross
surgical neuropathology specimens.
- Understand the importance of frozen section diagnosis during intraoperative consultations.
- Participate in the brain cutting, didactic and case conferences, and neuro-oncology
tumor board.
- Assists house staff to obtain case related clinical data.
- Review neuroanatomy and basic neuropathology, on discussions across the microscope,
power-point lectures and recommended literature.
Lab Hours: 5-10 Hours weekly
Small Group: 2 weekly
Lecture Hours: 2 hours weekly
Assessment:
- Students will be evaluated based on attendance and participation in assigned activities
as well as basic fund of knowledge with focus on pathologic diagnosis and clinical
correlations.
- Toward the end of the rotation, students are encouraged to give a 20-minute talk before
the Anatomic pathology faculty and pathology residents on a topic of their interest
and strength based on interesting case(s) encountered during this rotation.
