Random Fact:

How my parents met:

My mother, eighteen years old, pulled out a cigarette while she sat perched on bar stool in some random bar in Tehran, Iran. During the 60’s this must have been an irresistible sight for men -- for my father. No fewer than four standard issue U.S. Air Force lighters darted out towards the Persian cigarette she held aloft and lightly pinched between her fingers. I doubt the facts of what happened at this moment will ever be fully revealed to me. Did my dad reach the cigarette first or did my mom, presented with four eager flames simultaneously, grasp my father’s wrist and pull him towards her?  Both stories are romantic and equally nauseating, but the outcome was the same:  I was born -- a hybrid -- from an Iranian mother and a blue-eyed American serviceman.
