Applied Molecular Epidemiology (AME)

Summer Internship

The AME Summer Internship is an experiential program designed to expose students to public health epidemiology, laboratory science, and bioinformatics for real-world infectious disease investigations.  

Benefits to participation include mentorship, career networking, and hands-on training in molecular and cytogenetic laboratory techniques and bioinformatics. Interns are enrolled in a research study to determine whether participation in the program has an impact on their career decisions.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Participants must be current students interested in STEM careers, 16-25 years old, in good academic standing.  
  • Prior experience in a laboratory is not expected. Laboratory access is granted following completion of required biosafety training and paperwork.  
  • Minors, ages 16-17, must additionally complete a laboratory application with parent/guardian e-signature and obtain a physician clearance form with TB test results recorded.  
  • Immunization records are not required.  
  • Admission is contingent upon completion of screening procedures on a first come, first served basis until program slots are filled.

The AME Summer Internship is an education project within the Center for Applied Pathogen Epidemiology and Outbreak Control (a CDC Pathogen Genomics Center of Excellence.

Email AME_Internship@augusta.edu to set up an in-person screening and consent visit. If you are a minor, ages 16-17, you will need to bring a parent/guardian to the visit. All applicants must be prepared to provide evidence of good academic standing, such as an unofficial transcript or online portal progress report with grades. Once an applicant has been screened and consented, instructions will be provided for completing the required trainings and forms. 

The current schedule (2026) will take place from 9:00am to 1:00pm, Monday through Friday, 20 hours per week. Attendance is mandatory unless otherwise excused and applicants are expected to attend at least 80% of the program.

  • You may schedule an appointment at Student Health Services at AU or online at a pharmacy like CVS Minute Clinic to get a TB test. It is covered by most insurance and requires two in-person visits 2-3 days apart. Send an email to your family physician’s office (or the physician you have seen most recently) with your minors health questionnaire and TB test results attached for them to sign and email back to you.
  • Medical offices are often busy in winter but most are used to completing these requests for sports physicals or travel clearances. We can make allowances for document submissions after the January 31st deadline if needed, please let us know by email.
  • Interns are paid weekly by ClinCard and will be required to complete a W-9 to issue payments.

The Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is hosted its first-ever Applied Molecular Epidemiology Summer Internship, offering high school and undergraduate students a hands-on introduction to careers in laboratory science, genomic epidemiology, and bioinformatics. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence, the program aims to build a pipeline of future public health professionals by immersing students in real-world lab experiences.
