Commencement

Graduation Date: Friday, June 22nd 2018
Place: The Partridge Inn

Summary: For the last several years we have been inviting alumni to speak. Usually we have one alumnus and another keynote speaker. This year both speakers who took the podium were alumni. Held at the Summerville, liberal arts campus, it was good to get away and settle down with the department, our alumni and soon to be graduates. Audrey Forbes was again proved to be queen of organization assembling almost the entire event. Dr. Stephanie Goei along with a couple of her techs put together some gorgeous florals for each table at the meeting.

It has been a long time since our department has hosted graduation at Augusta's iconic Partridge Inn. The meeting site was wonderful keeping the group closely connected throughout the evening.

The first surprise of the evening was a cake for Dr. David Bogorad's birthday. Several techs along with Dr. Amy Estes and Stephanie Goei sporting on fake eye brows and mustaches came sauntering in while the rest of us joined in singing him Happy Birthday.

Dr. Nussbaum took up from that point thanking the techs, Audrey and the guest speakers. He said, "You have heard it said, 'Hope for the best, and plan for the worst.' That is all wrong." He went on to speak of Moses coming out of Egypt, Esau being tricked out of the birthright by Jacob, but each person/group flourishing despite the difficulties. Dr. Nussbaum went on to mention how our two speakers had each faced serious adversity in their personal and professional lives each facing the changes with faith in what they believed was right and doing it. He concluded by saying hope for the best and plan for the best, but be prepared. In the unexpected happens it will be ok.

Each of the seniors said a few words of thanks. They gave Dr. Zach Lukowski the teacher of the year award.

Dr. Amy Estes (assistant program director) showed a few baby pictures of the graduates tying the photos in to the personalities we know so well. After this they were given parting gifts and the festivities concluded.

This was the second year where the residents could meet the AGCME's scholarly activity goal through case reports. Most of the residents opted for these and some of them are soon to be published. Dr. Gayton gave pearls in refractive lens exchange and lessons on MIGS. His skill and innovation, participation in the lecture circuit, and tenure in the field were clearly demonstrated. Dr. Shmunes coupled practicality and enthusiasm for ophthalmology as well. From the earliest interactions between himself and our department he wanted to help our residents prepare for entry in the world of private practice with eyes wide open. Great work, Dr. Shmunes!
