Established in 1967, the Rheumatology division offers comprehensive evaluation and management of a broad spectrum of adult and pediatric rheumatological diseases.
Seven full-time adult physicians and one full-time pediatric rheumatologist offer services to patients through the Augusta University Medical Center and Clinics and the Children's Hospital of Georgia.
A fully accredited rheumatology fellowship is offered through the section of rheumatology and four rheumatology fellows are integral members of our patient care team.

I am delighted by your interest in the Rheumatology Fellowship Program at Wellstar/Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. This ACGME-accredited, two-year fellowship is dedicated to providing comprehensive clinical training with opportunities to pursue both basic science and clinical research.
Our curriculum includes a weekly didactics series featuring training in DXA and MSK ultrasound, hands-on joint injection practice using simulators and cadavers, and fellow-led case conferences. We also host a multidisciplinary, case-based conference in collaboration with Pulmonary, Radiology, and Pathology.
Outpatient clinical experiences include multidisciplinary clinics in sarcoidosis (with Cardiology and Pulmonary), inflammatory myopathy (with Neurology), and uveitis (with Ophthalmology), as well as two specialized systemic lupus erythematosus clinics. Fellows have two half-day continuity clinics and spend three months per year on the inpatient consult service. Elective opportunities are available in Pediatric Rheumatology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management.
As the fourth-largest medical school in the country, the Medical College of Georgia serves patients across Georgia and neighboring South Carolina counties. Fellows also gain valuable experience in medical education by teaching medical students.
We strongly support scholarly activities at regional, national, and international meetings, and our fellows consistently achieve at least one peer-reviewed publication during their training. I am proud to share that under my leadership as Program Director, we have a 100% ABIM board pass rate.
If you have any questions or would like additional information, please feel free to reach out.
Sincerely,
Laura Carbone, MD
Program Director
