FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How are recipients selected for Hull College of Business scholarships?

Recipient selection is completed in two phases.

  1. Scoring Phase: Each General Application is first reviewed by three review committee members (Hull College faculty), who score each application based on overall quality, considering a variety of factors:  effort, thoughtfulness, insightfulness, academic achievement, external engagement, character, integrity, determination, professionalism, style and grammar. Reviewers use the HCOB Scholarship Review Rubric for scoring in this phase.
  2. Selection Phase: Students are then filtered into applicant pools for each scholarship based on each scholarship’s eligibility criteria (e.g. minimum GPA, classification, major, financial need, etc.)  The review committee then meets to select the final recipients for each scholarship from the eligible top scoring applicants (approximately 10-20% of those eligible).

If I am selected as a recipient, what will be expected of me?

Hull College scholarship recipients are expected to:

  • Return the signed acceptance form attached to the award letter.
  • Write a thank you note to the generous donor responsible for the award. (instructions given in notification email)
  • Attend the campus-wide scholarship dinner, if available. (invites sent from the Office of Advancement)
  • Represent the Hull College of Business in class and in the community, with professionalism, determination, hard work, collaboration, and innovative thinking.
  • Be willing to participate in opportunities reserved for scholarship recipients and/or honor society members (possible meetings with business executives, field trips, or events needing a fine Hull representative are some examples)

When will scholarship recipients be selected and notified?

The majority of Hull College scholarship recipients are selected in late April and notified by the end of May.  Women’s Leadership Academy and Peer Leader recipients are selected and notified in June.

Study Abroad scholarship recipients are selected in late December and notified in early January.

How will I know if I’ve received a scholarship?

Recipients are notified by email, with an award letter and acceptance form that must be signed and returned for funds to be disbursed.

How and when will the awards be disbursed?

All scholarship recipients, except for Study Abroad, receive their award in the academic year following the notification of the award (if notified in May 2020, awarded in 2020-21 academic year).

Half of the amount is awarded in Fall, and half awarded in Spring, if the recipient remains eligible.  Funds are deposited into the student’s AU account, to be applied directly towards tuition and fees.

Study Abroad awards are awarded in early January, with funds disbursed directly to the Study Abroad office and applied to the student’s account.

Is financial need, academic merit, or involvement in extracurricular activities/organizations considered in the selection of all HCOB scholarship recipients?

Each individual scholarship has its own eligibility criteria, so the simple answer is no, unless it is specifically stated in the eligibility criteria for that scholarship (see descriptions).

If you wish your financial need to be considered, you must complete a FAFSA

In the Scoring Phase, these may be considered by a review committee member in determining the applicant’s score among other criteria, but not necessarily.
