The Honor Society of Nursing, is dedicated to improving the health of people worldwide by increasing the scientific base of nursing practice.

Founded in 1992, the Society encompasses 490 chapters in 85 countries around the world. The local chapter, Beta Omicron, was chartered on April 20, 1974 at the then Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University) with the stated purposes of:

  • Recognizing superior academic achievement
  • Recognizing the development of leadership qualities
  • Fostering high professional standards
  • Encouraging creative work
  • Strengthening commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.

The organization places emphasis on collaboration and has as its highest priority the development, dissemination, and utilization of nursing knowledge. This is done in a variety of ways which include grants, publications and conferences.
