Teaching Interests
Dr. Mitchell has extensive experience teaching nursing care of critically ill patients, nursing theory, and research that supports evidence-based nursing practice. In addition, she has taught graduate level courses on teaching strategies in nursing education and supervised graduate level scholarship.

Research Interests
Dr. Mitchell's research interests focus on health care needs of under served populations and social determinants of health. Much of her work implements the arts-based qualitative method of "photovoice." Her publications and presentations include study findings related to smoking in rural low income women, social determinants of smoking, and Texas School Nurse screening for Type 2 Diabetes in school aged children. She has received internal funding related to Type 2 Diabetes screening in Texas school aged children, and developing mobile access to health care in rural Texas.
Clinically, Dr. Mitchell has been certified as a critical care nurse and practiced in adult critical care environments with emphasis on cardiovascular surgery, trauma, and organ transplant.
