Radiation Safety

The Radiation Safety Office ensures the safe and responsible use of radiation and radioactive materials for various purposes, including research, education, and development. The office is responsible for regulatory compliance, monitoring, licensing and permits, policies and procedures, safety training, waste management, and emergency response.

Research Laboratories that handle radioactive materials or use radiation-emitting devices must adhere to stringent safety protocols to minimize the risk of exposure. The implementation of comprehensive safety measures involves the use of shielding materials, containment systems, and monitoring equipment to control and detect radiation levels. Strict guidelines govern the handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive substances, emphasizing the importance of proper training for laboratory personnel. Additionally, laboratories must establish emergency response plans to swiftly address any incidents. A robust radiation safety program is essential to foster a secure working environment, protecting both laboratory personnel and the broader community from the potential adverse effects of radiation.
