A Slow and Gradual Change - Works by Joseph Kameen Exhibition

 October 20-January 2, 2026

Reception: Thursday, November 13, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

The Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art at Augusta University is pleased to present A Slow and Gradual Change, a solo exhibition by painter Joseph Kameen.

The exhibition will be on view October 20, 2025 – January 2, 2026, with a public reception on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 5–7 p.m.

Kameen’s paintings often explore everyday settings and the quiet moments that surround daily routines. “In my work, I am interested in the role that routine events play in self-awareness and identity, and in the ways that internal experiences and external spaces can more easily overlap during these quiet moments,” he explains. “My paintings frequently depict domestic subjects in the moments just before or after an event, and the ambiguity and mystery that emerges when our emotions intertwine with our environment.”

Kameen is a painter based in South Carolina, where he is an associate professor of art at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Originally from Pittsburgh, he earned his BFA in painting and sculpture from Boston University and his MFA in painting from Indiana University Bloomington. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in locations including New York, London, Berlin, and Greece. It has been featured in publications such as Friend of the Artist, Emboss Magazine, and PIKCHUR Magazine.

Our Location

Washington Hall

We are located on the ground floor of Washington Hall on the Summerville Campus. When you enter through the main gate you arrive at a round-about, do almost a full turn around, and then turn to the right (a sign says Washington Hall). The road will turn slightly to the right and you will see a medium height brick building with a fortress jagged roof-line on your left side. This is Washington Hall. The entry that leads to the gallery is the one you see first as you approach the building.
