EM PGY1 US Rotation

Emergency Medicine PGY1 Ultrasound

3 Week Rotation Schedule

This rotation is intended to be completed each afternoon following your anesthesia rotation in the morning.

Requirements over the three weeks include:

  • Scan 3-4 hours each afternoon during your rotation (Weds - attend US fellowship meeting in the US Center) – unless directed by the attending all scans should be marked as educational in EXO works. All images obtained should be sent to one of the three attendings who are on shift to sign off at the time you are scanning
  • Watch all videos listed below
  • Attend US fellowship conference Wednesday afternoon 3pm to 5pm
  • Obtain 25 FAST scans (5 abnormals)
  • Obtain 25 GB images
  • Obtain 25 Aorta images with measurements
  • Perform 10 DVT ultrasounds (5 on patients who have had a scan performed by radiology)
  • Place 15 peripheral IVs
  • All images MUST be tagged in EXO works using the tag “PGY1 EM ROTATION”
  • Credit will be only given for images that have been signed off by the attending on shift while you are scanning

Recommended schedule (you are NOT required to do things in this exact order)

WEEK 1 - FAST

  • View the following videos:
      • Introduction to Clinician Based Ultrasound  
      • Physics and Fundamentals I  
      • Physics and Fundamentals II  
      •  Fast Exam
      •  Knobology  
      •  Care & Maintenance of the US Machine
  • Ultrasound Imaging – Obtain 25 sets of FAST images (4 windows-with labels for each view)
  • Goal - (demonstrate free fluid in 5 of your images)

WEEK 2 - Aorta and Gallbladder

  • View the following videos:
    • Physics and Fundamentals III 
    • Physics and Fundamentals IV 
    • Aorta
    • Gallbladder
  • Ultrasound Imaging - Obtain 25 Aorta Images (Aortic sweep video, proximal aorta trans with measurements, mid aorta trans with measurements, distal aorta trans with measurements)
  • Ultrasound Imaging - Obtain 25 GB images (GB long with wall measurement, GB short, CBD with measurement)

WEEK 3 - DVT and Peripheral IV

  • View the following videos:
    • Ultrasound Guided Procedures
    • DVT
  • Ultrasound imaging - Obtain 10 DVT ultrasound CLIPS (saphenous vein with compression, prox femoral vein with compression, bifurcation with compression, popliteal vein with compression)
  • Ultrasound imaging – Perform 15 peripheral guided IVs (obtain clip of target vein with compression prior to IV cannulation)

Wednesday each week

  • Fellowship conference  at the ultrasound center (CJ 3101) – also available via TEAMS

 

By the end of the rotation you should have all of the following set of educational images that have been signed off by the attending on shift. 

  • FAST 25
  • Aorta 25
  • GB 25
  • DVT 10
  • Peripheral IV – 15

You must tag all of your images in EXO Works   “PGY1 EM ROTATION”
