Pediatric Surgery Features

Our pediatric surgery group offers:

  • A neonatal transport team and a pediatric transport team;
  • A pediatric laparoscopic suite that allows surgeons to operate through “peep holes” rather than larger incisions. Children’s Hospital of Georgia is one of only two centers in Georgia specializing in these minimally invasive procedures that result in less pain, smaller scars and shorter hospital stays;
  • A team of board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric surgeons specializing in general and thoracic surgery;
  • Board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists;
  • Child life specialists who use dolls and imaginative play to help children understand and cope with care;
  • Inpatient care in the area’s only Level III-D (the highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), if needed;
  • Inpatient care in the area’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), if needed;
  • Nine pediatric operating/procedure rooms designed and equipped especially for children;
  • Operating room BUDS (Better Understanding During Surgery), specially trained volunteers who support families with children undergoing surgery;
  • Pediatric radiology and a specialized X-ray department for children;
  • Pediatric trauma service for children ages 0-12 years;
  • Perioperative services to deliver compassionate care before and after surgery. Dedicated nurse managers will explain each step of your child’s surgery and recovery;
  • Satellite clinics and telemedicine to make pediatric surgical expertise available in outlying areas;
  • The region’s only Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) system to keep the hearts and lungs of critically ill children working during healing.
