Internal Medicine Residency Program
Welcome to the MCG Internal Medicine Residency!
I am honored that you are considering the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University for
your residency training. Since our founding in 1957, we have proudly trained generations
of internists who have gone on to thrive in fellowship, academic medicine, and community
practice.
Here, you will join a community of more than 70 residents who care for patients across
a broad range of settings—including Wellstar MCG Health, the Charlie Norwood VA Medical
Center, and more than 80 outpatient clinics. This breadth of experience ensures that
our graduates leave with the confidence, skills, and compassion to care for patients
in any setting.
Our program is built on progressive autonomy, mentorship, and leadership development.
We emphasize the values of empathy, teamwork, and professionalism, while also offering
opportunities for research, innovation, and discovery. Most importantly, you will
find a welcoming environment where residents and faculty support one another and grow
together.
It has been my privilege to serve as Program Director for the past six years, and
I could not be more proud of the community we have built. Thank you for your interest
in our program—I look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to the MCG family.
With gratitude,
Alyce M. Oliver, PhD, MD

Our Mission
The mission of the MCG Internal Medicine residency training program is to produce
compassionate, competent physicians that are prepared for fellowship or independent
practice and who provide high-quality, ethical, moral, and cost efficient patient
care.
This is accomplished through excellence in teaching, discovery, clinical care, and
service. Residents care for individuals who have diverse disease states from varied
socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds in both the in-patient and ambulatory settings. We
provide an environment and culture of quality care, patient safety, collegiality and
physician well-being. Our purpose is to inspire curiosity and systematic investigation
while providing residents the tools necessary for their future professional and personal
success and to instill the need for habitual life-long learning that is required in
the vocation of a physician.
AIMS
- Equip residents with patient care abilities, professionalism, interpersonal communication
skills, understanding of system-based practice, and appreciation of practice based
learning to participate in successful clinical practice or fellowship after residency.
- Instill residents with medical knowledge through clinical training in a variety of
environments, rigorous didactics and discussion, and continuous self-directed lifelong
learning.
- Empower residents with the clinical skills, research productivity and faculty mentorship
necessary to be competitive for top fellowship training positions or preferred practice
choices.
