Sports Medicine Schedule

Weekly patient care experiences for fellows include: one half day of Family and Community Medicine Clinic, six half days at West Wheeler Orthopedic clinics, one half day of musculoskeletal (MSK) clinic at the Family and Community Medicine Center, one half day of sports medicine didactics, one half day of MSK ultrasound didactics and training room experiences at Augusta University training rooms and local high school training rooms.

Educational Topics

  • Anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of exercise;
  • Guidelines for appropriate history-taking and physical evaluation prior to participation in exercise and sport;
  • Physical conditioning requirements for various exercise related activities and sports; 
  • Effects of disease on exercise and the use of exercise in the care of medical and musculoskeletal problems;
  • Prevention, evaluation, and management, and rehabilitation of injuries and sports-related illnesses; 
  • Clinical pharmacology relevant to sports medicine and the effects of therapeutic, performance-enhancing, and mood-altering drugs; 
  • Promotion of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles; 
  • Basic principles of sports ultrasound, and the sonographic appearance of normal and pathologic adipose, fascia, muscle, tendon, bone, cartilage, joint, vasculature, and nerves;
