About the Program
The EM residency is well-respected on campus and is consistently one of the strongest residency programs in the institution. We are an ACGME accredited 3-year program and enjoy full departmental status at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
Our residency has grown significantly from its inception and currently has permanent ACGME approval to accept 14 residents per year.
The Emergency Department itself sees a broad spectrum of patient conditions and have an annual volume of approximately 90,000 patients. The ED takes up over 10,000 square feet and has a total of 61 adult beds, 13 of which are critical care rooms.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
"Medical College of Georgia"—or "MCG"—refers to the medical school and corresponding
residencies including Emergency Medicine. Over the years, the Medical College of Georgia
has combined with other professional health care schools (i.e. dentistry, nursing,
etc) to become Georgia Health Sciences University. In 2013, GHSU merged with Augusta
State University and became Augusta University (Augusta University). All colleges
are included under the Augusta University, including MCG.

Military Affiliation
Starting in 2008, our emergency residency became affiliated with the United States Army. Previously, the army training sites for Emergency Medicine included Madigan Army Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Darnall Army Medical Center. We are proud to participate in training Emergency Medicine physicians that will be serving the country through military service post-graduation. Each year, approximately six members of our intern class will come from the military match with the remainder coming from the civilian match.
Affiliation with the United States Army has enabled us to expand our clinical opportunities beyond Augusta University. We now have scheduled rotations and available electives at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, a major military hospital located in Augusta.
