The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The LCME is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the World Federation for Medical Education as the notable authority for the accreditation of medical education programs leading to the MD degree. It has joint oversight by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA).

Accreditation, the process of quality assurance in post-secondary education, determines whether an institution or program meets established standards for function, structure, and performance. The process also fosters institutional and program improvement.

Accreditation by the LCME establishes eligibility for selected federal grants and programs including Title VII funding, most state boards of medical licensure, eligibility for students to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination, and eligibility for students to enter residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residency programs.
