Due to our overwhelming concern for our patients, the Dental College is following AU Health protocols in requiring COVID-19 testing for patients undergoing aerosol-generating procedures regardless of vaccination status.

Aerosol-Generating Procedures

Aerosol-generating procedures include any treatment that generates sprays, mists or dust such as preparinga tooth with a dental drill for a filling or crown or using an electric device during a cleaning appointment to remove plaque and calculus from teeth.

Patient Requirements

  • Patients required to take the COVID-19-rapid screening test will self administer the test at the beginning of their dental appointments. The screening is self-administered by each patient, takes 10 minutes and costs $13.
  • Patients who travel a great distance to the Dental College should be encouraged to test within 48 hours (or 72 hours if the appointment is on Monday or Tuesday) ahead of their appointments and bring the results of a health care provider-administered test with them.
  • Results from a home self-test will not be accepted.
  • COVID-19 rapid screeningis not required at the DCG for examinations, diagnostic impressions, x-rays, post-operative appointments, removal of sutures, and cleanings without the use of ultrasonic instruments.
  • Patients who do not want to be have a rapid screening for aerosol-generating procedures can have their dental appointment rescheduled at a later date.

Communication to Patients

Please reiterate to patients that this action is being taken to protect patients whose mouths and noses are exposed during dental treatment. Although the Dental College has implemented strict personal precautions for our faculty/residents/staff/students and patients, and have instituted several building modifications to stop virus transmission, the Delta variant of COVID-19 remains very contagious. COVID-19 rapid screening is for their protection.

Patient information about COVID-19 and the rapid screening protocols are now available on the DCG website. Please direct patients to this site for more information.
