Comp Care Tips

CLINIC

  1. Proper clinic attire is required when treating patients.
  2. Headphones are not allowed to be worn by students in clinic.
  3. Be prepared for clinic (this includes basic knowledge of pharmacology involving patient; patient’s medical history; dental techniques and materials you will be using). The faculty willingly gives a lot of help and advice, but we are not your Google search.
  4. A clean mirror and explorer should be readily available for faculty to check your patient.
  5. After administering 1 carpule of local anesthesia you will need to ask faculty for permission before administering any additional local anesthesia. All empty carpules of local anesthesia should be kept until the patient has been dismissed and you are cleaning your operatory.  No Blocks may be administered with Septocaine.
  6. The Isolite can only be used with faculty approval. (The rubber dam is still the preferred method of isolation when possible.)
  7. It is your responsibility to have the covering faculty sign your organizer.
  8. Assisting credit will only be given if assisting is done during a procedure.
  9. Patients need to be dismissed from clinic by 11:30AM & 4:30PM
  10. Patients are NOT to be scheduled in EDS for anything other than an emergency (on their part, not yours).

TREATMENT SEQUENCE & PHASES

  1. D0005 is not allowed to be completed on a perio maintenance patient until after they are cleared by a perio faculty.
  2. No phase III treatment planning at 1st Can be done at 2nd appt. after case is discussed with a faculty member.
  3. Patient can go to TPB before all operative is done.
  4. All phase III signed treatment plans (including those not started in Comp Care) need to be approved with Comp Care faculty for sequencing in the clinic manual.
  5. Patients must have planned but NOT completed procedures in Phase I & II along with an estimated Phase III (does not have to be approved) in order to have a payment plan established.

INDIRECT RESTORATIONS & REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS

  1. Self QA must be done and signed by the faculty who approved your lab case prior to the patient’s appointment date; Not at the beginning of the appointment. If a case is rejected, the case should be discussed with the faculty that covered that procedure; NOT with the individual that rejected the case.
  2. In order to have crowns completed in Axium, student must have all steps signed off in Clinic Manual.
  3. Provisionals must be made and ready to cement before an impression may be attempted.
  4. No impressions attempted after 11:00 AM or 4:00 PM.
  5. You are responsible for making sure you have the CORRECT crown code (single unit vs. FPD, natural tooth vs. implant) on the treatment plan. __________ (Initial here).
  6. You are to scan, design, and cement your E4D crowns with the faculty that approved your impression.
  7. E4D crowns are treated the same as other crowns (lab work, submission to lab tracking, and QA).
  8. QA is only done in the lab. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  9. ONLY the following faculty may approve removable treatment plans: Drs. Cooper, Guinn, Brenes, Britton, and Mollica. _________ (Initial here).
  10. Last date for delivering any removable prosthesis is 35 days prior to the last day of clinic. That day is: _____________________. (Initial here) ______.
  11. All phase III treatment needs to be mounted on a Stratos articulator for diagnosis (with lateral or protrusive records) unless otherwise approved by faculty.
  12. You should index and use Vaseline prior to mounting ALL cases.
  13. You should pick 2 faculty for complex cases and schedule with them in clinic. (Phase III cases only.); The 2 faculty names should be written on the first page of the sequencing form for that patient.
  14. Implant supported crowns include the abutment (billing is included in the cost); abutment supported crowns must also include a custom abutment code (2 separate charges).

COMPETENCIES

  1. You CANNOT request faculty for competencies.
  2. Competency attempts must be identified & paperwork filled out prior to the start of the appointment. Competency Approval Forms must be signed by Team Captain/Assistant Team Captain prior to starting competencies. Competency Guidelines sheet in organizer must be signed by you and the faculty primary grader prior to initiation of exam.
