Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program
Overview
The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program accepting two fellows each year. Our fellowship combines high-acuity surgical critical care with the experience of a busy Level I Trauma Center, a substantial penetrating trauma burden, and an active emergency general surgery practice.
Our goal is straightforward: to graduate surgeons who are prepared to step directly into independent practice and use advanced critical care skills as an integral part of caring for Acute Care Surgery patients at the highest level.
The core of the fellowship is our closed Shock-Trauma ICU, where fellows lead a multidisciplinary team caring for critically ill trauma and emergency general surgery patients. We believe a fellowship year should be a fellowship, not an extension of residency.
Fellows are given real responsibility and meaningful autonomy, with faculty support focused on refining judgment, decision-making, and leadership as they transition from senior trainees to independent surgeons.
Located on the banks of the Savannah River, Augusta is the state’s second-largest city and was recently ranked the second most favorable place to live in the state. It is a growing and thriving city with a metropolitan-area population of around 450,000 and boasts a wealth of recreational opportunities.
Although best known for the Masters Golf tournament, it offers much more, including excellent restaurants, multiple entertainment venues, all enjoyed in an area in which the cost of living remains low. It is also a 2-hour drive to numerous southern points of interest such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Savannah, Charleston, multiple beaches, and mountains.
Augusta is a wonderful city in which to continue surgical education with the luxury of a large metropolitan area, but the conveniences of a smaller city.
