Medical Illustration has been a critical component of Neurosurgery for centuries. The use of Medical Illustration
in education and surgical training has been essential to the advancement of neurosurgery,
not only to communicate research findings with other surgeons but also for surgeons
to communicate to patients.
As medical knowledge and surgical innovations continue to improve quality of life,
medical illustrators will continue to play their part behind scenes, documenting and
educating though fascinating imagery.
Neuroscience Division of Biomedical Visualization was created to support the teaching mission of surgeons at the Medical College of
Georgia. Medical illustration has been a fundamental component of our department since
1959 when the department's first Chief, Dr. George C. Smith, hired MCG Medical Illustration
Graduate Frances DeRoller as the first medical illustrator in the Department of Neurosurgery.
Since, some of the most successful medical illustrators in the business have worked
at MCG Neurosurgery.
