Student research programs in the Department of Medicine include the Medical Scholar's Program from the Dean's Summer Research Program (DSRP) and the Provost's Student Research Program (SRP).
The DSRP is a sponsored summer research experience for medical students between first and second year. Students working with a Medicine faculty member will have access to all TRP-sponsored activities including additional educational courses and mentoring. The TRP has worked with DSRP students since 2013 and has facilitated the presentation of research abstracts at regional and national meetings, and in 2015, a published manuscript.
The SRP is a campus-wide initiative intended to offer a mentored research experience
for any fulltime undergraduate or graduate student with an Augusta University faculty
member. Initiated in 2015, the SRP offers up to $1000 in research support (through
the voucher program) for a mentored student research project. To qualify, the student
and mentor must participate in a studio justifying the request. The voucher must be
used to advance the research project presented at the studio.
The major students research opportunities are the Augusta University Dean's summer
research program (DSRP), as well as the summer Epidemiology and Biostatics course
offered through the Translational Research Program.
Every fall the College of Medicine sponsors an open forum for first year medical students to learn about summer research opportunities through the DSRP. The Department presents opportunities on relevant projects at that meeting. Typically, 15 to 20 students join us for summer research on funded scholarships.
The TRP has helped sponsor resident and fellow research that has led to regional and national presentations, as well as manuscript publications.
The Translational Research Program in the Department of Medicine is one platform for
assisting in research projects for residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine.
Once you have identified a faculty mentor and have a general idea of your project,
please go to the TRP website and request a studio http://www.augusta.edu/mcg/medicine/research/trp/request-studio.php . From the studio, a more clear direction on your work can be identified.
Other clinical, translational and basic science opportunities abound for trainees at every level.
