

Dr. Afonso earned her medical degree from Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She subsequently trained as an Internal Medicine physician before moving to the US in 2005 to continue her medical education. She completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida, before going on to Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. On graduation from that program, she joined the faculty there as an Assistant Professor, and become the medical director of the endoscopy lab, where she worked until 2019 when she moved with her family to Augusta, Georgia. Currently she works as a gastroenterologist at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. She is the VA Site Director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. Dr. Afonso has extensive clinic experience in teaching the next generation of physicians with updated guidelines and is compassionate in providing a comprehensive and individualized care to her patients. She is fluent in Spanish and Portugese. She is also a Yoga instructor FYT-200H.
