Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
Preview medicine’s data-augmented future with physician-level data science skills and machine intelligence literacy.
This course has been co-developed by experts in AIArtificial Intelligence from the College of Computer & Cyber Sciences, and experts in healthcare and medical education from the Medical College of Georgia.
By incorporating multi-media teaching methods with small group and asynchronous learning opportunities we equip learners with the AI literacy requisite to answer these and other questions:
- What will AI technology mean to the next era of medicine and practice?
- Will AI help doctors to take better care of patients with complex illnesses?
- What must medical learners understand to effectively & ethically practice AIaugmented medicine?
Learners will engage in scholarly discourse focused on key theoretical and applied AI references, and all will use the IBM Watson Studio platform to run datasets through various AI algorithms.

- Define principles of Machine Learning (ML) for data analysis and visualization.
- Apply data science and ML to real-life applications in medicine and healthcare.
- Discuss ethical and other emerging issues with AI integration in clinical practice.
Course Instructors
Dr. Doug Miller
A medical graduate of McGill University, Dr. Doug Miller was trained in cardiovascular medicine at Emory University and Harvard University. Having published >200 original papers and book chapters in the field, Dr. Miller enjoys a global reputation as a cardiologist and leader in academic medicine. Unique among his peers, Dr. Miller served over a decade as the dean of three research-intensive medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, while also overseeing operations of three successful med-tech incubators. As an MBA (Saint Louis University) and an executive program certificate holder (UC Berkeley, Harvard Business School), Dr. Miller provides board service to several global health policy and biomedical business organizations. An entrepreneur holding three U.S. patents in the fields of pharmaceutical R&D, medical imaging and artificial intelligence (AI), in 2018 Dr. Miller became the Medical College of Georgia Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Miller’s 2018 publications in high impact journals and invited lectures make him a leading authority on AI applications to healthcare, medical imaging and bioinformatics.

Dr. Murthy Rallapalli
Dr. Murthy Rallapalli has been in IT industry for over 20 years specializing in the area of Information Security, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Privacy. He currently teaches AI and Cyber security courses at Augusta University's School of Computer & Cyber Sciences. In addition, he is a Quantum computing ambassador with IBM.
Dr. Rallapalli holds a Ph.D. from Stevens Institute of Technology in the area of Data Privacy and Systems Engineering. He holds several patents in the area of privacy and Analytics, authored several red books in the same domain.
Dr. Rallapalli is a 2019-2020 Fulbright Scholar in the area of cyber security and Data science.
Dr. Ravindra Kolhe
Currently, Dr. Kolhe is an Associate Professor in the Department of pathology at the Augusta University, Augusta GA, and divides his time between directing Molecular Pathology, Cytogenetics, Breast Pathology, teaching and research. He is the CLIA laboratory director for the Georgia Esoteric & Molecular Labs and also serves as the Medical Director for the Cytogenetics Laboratory.
As a Molecular and Genetic Pathologist, he is actively engaged in molecular and cytogenetic evaluation of patient samples as a part of the multi- disciplinary clinical team treating patients in a personalized and precision medicine model. As a Breast Pathologist, he provides expert opinions for the breast multidisciplinary tumor boards, consultation and second opinion to difficult breast cancer patients referred to Georgia Cancer Center.
Kolhe is an physician-scientist with expertise in basic mechanisms of tumor immunology, including tolerogenic DCs, Tregs, and the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase pathway He has over 160 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and invited reviews most in the realm of the molecular pathology of various malignancies.
Dr. Jason Orlosky
Jason Orlosky is currently a professor at Osaka University and adjunct faculty at Augusta University, with research topics such as augmented reality, interaction, and artificial intelligence. Some of his research goals include improving the safety and usability of AR, promoting cross-functional and interdisciplinary research efforts, better understanding the human brain and its relationship to machines, and improving human-computer integration. From 2015 - 2017, he was awarded a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship for research on intelligent AR and is currently funded by the Office of Naval Research. His current research involves Eye Tracked Vision Augmentation.
