Comprehensive Student Goals and Objectives

By the end of the course, the student will enhance his/her:

GOAL #1: PERCEPTION OF AND ATTITUDES TOWARD THE ROLE OF A
PHYSICIAN

Objectives:

  1. Assume responsibility and initiative in caring for patients.
  2. Devote appropriate time and energy to all duties.
  3. Exhibit maturing in interpersonal relationships, personal values and medical ethics.
  4. Respect the rights of patients.

GOAL #2: PERCEPTION OF AND ATTITUDES TOWARD FAMILY MEDICINE

Objectives:

  1. Understand the necessity for providing continuous, comprehensive health care to the family.
  2. Recognize the importance of life events to the family and the impact of those events on the health of the individual.
  3. Provide family and person-oriented health care.
  4. Recognize the importance of health maintenance.
  5. Appreciate the necessity for providing care for both the acute and chronically ill patient.
  6. Recognize the importance of being the physician of first contact.
  7. Understand the importance of the role of the physician as the coordinator of the health care team.
  8. Become the patient's advocate.
  9. Recognize the importance of socio-economic factors in medical care.

GOAL #3: ABILITY TO ESTABLISH EFFECTIVE PHYSICIAN-PATIENT RELATIONSHIPS

Objectives:

  1. Establish rapport and communicate with patients in a caring manner.
  2. Gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.

GOAL #4: SKILLS IN GATHERING AND RECORDING APPROPRIATE PATIENT INFORMATION

Objectives:

  1. Collect and record historical data recognizing the impact of the patient's hereditary, social, economic, religious, family and occupational background on his or her presenting problem.
  2. Understand the characteristics of various lifestyles and life cycles of a family and their effects on health and disease.
  3. Recognize the importance of the psychosocial aspects of health and disease.
  4. Perform physical examinations and record resulting data.
  5. Order appropriate laboratory studies for both ambulatory and hospitalized patients and record the data.
  6. Write progress notes and summaries on ambulatory and hospitalized patients for both acute and chronic care needs.
  7. Perform diagnostic procedures and record the data.
  8. Use the problem-oriented record system to record data and maintain patient records.

GOAL #5: SKILLS IN MAKING APPROPRIATE CLINICAL JUDGEMENTS

Objectives:

  1. Recognize medical emergencies and establish health care priorities.
  2. Define patient's problems by using sound judgment in the selection and sequence of studies.
  3. Evaluate available information in making a diagnosis and use knowledge related to problems frequently seen in Family and Community Medicine.
  4. Establish appropriate diagnosis through comprehensive knowledge and intelligent interpretation of carefully selected clinical information.
  5. Provide patient care through appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management based on an awareness of cost.
  6. Gain insight into personal limitations.
  7. Use proper consultation to aid in patient management.
  8. Make appropriate referrals.

GOAL #6: SKILLS IN PLANNING, IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING THERAPY

Objectives:

  1. Initiate patient care in an orderly and appropriate manner.
  2. Describe the use, limitations and problems of therapeutic regimens.
  3. Closely observe the patient's clinical course for short and long-term care and modify the care as necessary.
  4. Understand the impact of health problems on patients and patients' families.
  5. Provide appropriate patient education.
  6. Recognize impact of socio-economic factors.

GOAL #7: SKILLS IN PLANNING, IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING HEALTH MAINTENANCE, DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTINUOUS HEALTH CARE

Objectives:

  1. Apply methods of health maintenance and disease prevention.
  2. Assess health risk factors based upon knowledge of the patient's age, sex, habits, occupation, genetic and environmental influences.
  3. Identify the health resources available in the community.
  4. Provide continuous health care.
