Clinical Teaching
Clinical teaching typically occurs in settings where patient or health care is being
provided (e.g., clinics, inpatient units, labs) as opposed to classrooms or small
groups. As a result, clinical teachers often have (at least) two roles at the same time: teacher
and healthcare provider. Another significant difference is that learners are working with patients as opposed
to scenarios and facts in books or lectures. Effective clinical teaching is a balance
of providing optimal patient care while breaking down complex clinical issues to manageable
learning points for learners.
