I first became interested in coming to MCG after meeting the residents, staff, and
faculty here. Everyone seemed very happy with the opportunities this program afforded
for intellectual and professional advancement. There is great comradery among the
residents and faculty as well and this really shows in everything we do. MCG offers
a unique blend of clinical experiences, research, activism and community outreach,
allowing you the freedom to choose what direction you want to take your career. The
faculty is very interested in your education and in helping you to maximize your potential.
There is also good collegiality between the psychiatry and psychology department,
offering residents many opportunities to learn psychotherapy. The hospital and clinics
themselves are superb, and everything is together in one location. I am also impressed
by how many other mental health facilities there are in the area including the Southeast
regional VA Mental Health Center, the Augusta State Medical Prison, The Augusta Youth
Detention Center, The Augusta Public Mental Health Clinic, and the Augusta State Psychiatric
Facility (Serenity). All of these facilities offer great experiences for residents
to learn about different forms of mental health care offered in different environments.
I personally chose to go into child and adolescent psychiatry, and have found the
program here to be an intimate and supportive experience for me. I have been very
happy with my training here at MCG. I love the facilities, the opportunities here,
the environment and the low cost of living.
