Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Externship

Course Description: During this course students will see consultation cases from various departments, review chart work, and discuss cases during rounds with the consult physicians. This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn directly about the medicine/psychiatry interface.

Eating Disorders Externship

Course Description: During this course students will observe and participate in initial assessments and evaluations of patients with eating disorders and individual and group psychotherapy, as well as psychopharmacological management and medical assessment and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with eating disorders.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Externship

Course Description: Students will participate as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team in the evaluation and management of children and adolescents with varying severities of psychiatric illness. They will be involved in individual, family, and group treatment modalities, didactic presentations on topics in child and adolescent psychiatry. This rotation involves experiences in consultation/liaison, residential inpatient, and outpatient clinic with others as available or as per interests of the student.

HIV & LGTBQ+ Mental Health

Course Description: During this course students will participate in the treatment of individuals infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS through assessment, individual and family therapy, and psychological consultation in several HIV/AIDS treatment environments.

Course Description: During this course students will review current literature, summarizing it as appropriate for departmental journal club, case conference or any other appropriate venue, develop and work on a portion of or a full independent research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Addiction Psychiatry Externship

Students will rotate at Wellstar MCG Health, Stoney Outpatient Clinic, and Hope House residential treatment center.

Course Description: The addiction medicine elective provides experience in multiple settings including hospital-based consults, outpatient medication assisted treatment and residential treatment. There is a wide variety of patients including underserved, e.g., substance abusing pregnant women in treatment with their children. You will be working with Addiction Medicine physicians and fellows as well as psychiatry residents.

Emergency Psychiatry Externship

Course Description: During this course students will observe and participate in patient evaluation, verbal and written patient case presentation including documentation in medical records, and psychotherapy techniques frequently used in emergencies: supportive, de-briefing, etc. The course is designed to introduce the medical student to the fundamentals of emergency psychiatry.

Course Description: Students are expected to attend all ECT sessions during the rotation. Students will also participate in clinic, and will assist with ECT and TMS consultations, procedures, aftercare management, verification and authorization as necessary.

Advanced Psychiatry Externship

Course Description: This course is designed for students interested in Psychiatry to prepare them for internship. During the rotation, students will collaborate as a member of an interprofessional team and demonstrate ability to act as primary clinician for patients under attending supervision. They will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in conducting initial assessments and evaluations and to distinguish appropriate psychopharmacological, somatic treatments, and psychotherapy for psychiatric disorders.

Course Description: Students will observe and participate in initial assessments and evaluations of outpatient adults with various mood disorders, perform psychopharmacological management and medical assessment and treatment, direct patient care, participate in team meetings and group therapy, and attend associated didactic learning activities.

Psychiatry Media Elective

Course Description: This elective course is designed to provide third- and fourth-year medical students with a self-directed learning experience centered on media-related issues from a mental health perspective. Under regular faculty supervision and discussion, students critically examine assigned readings and media (e.g., social media, video games, music, cinema, literature) and evaluate how these portray mental health. Students also review academic literature discussing the influence of various media on mental health and well-being.  In addition to theoretical exploration, this course integrates a clinical component to enhance practical skills. Students have opportunities to apply their learning in clinical settings by collaborating with mental health professionals, assessing the impact of media on patients, or creating media-focused interventions to address mental health challenges. Students may conduct media assessments as part of patient care or participate in interdisciplinary case discussions exploring the media’s role in mental health treatment.  Students develop a personalized, media-related project as part of their final project. Options may include creating social media content focused on mental health education or advocacy, collaborating with MCG’s media team on public health initiatives, writing a letter to the editor or a learner’s perspective column for a journal, or conducting a literature review on media-related mental health issues.

Psychiatry Chief Elective

Course Description: This elective is designed to allow M4 students an opportunity to practice their leadership skills as they serve as peer role model to M3 students on the Psychiatry rotation. Student must receive the site clerkship director’s approval.
