Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
Medical school training often emphasizes that learners develop an “essential body
of knowledge”, and the lecture is a common approach to building this knowledge. However, educators have long recognized that learning occurs best by DOING and THINKING
THROUGH PROBLEMS. The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach is a teaching method that provides learners
with opportunities to develop skills in applying knowledge for a given scenario as
well as extending it to future, varied problems. Because many health professional
teachers were not trained in the PBL format, understanding the basic why and how to
facilitate problem-based learning is greatly beneficial.
